24in screen size, 1,920×1,080 resolution, DVI: yes, VGA: yes, HDMI:

Another 24in LCD that’s available for less than £200, Iiyama’s new 1080p model is a lot more attractive than the company’s smaller models.

It’s glossy black finish instantly adds appeal, while the 1,920×1,080 resolution and HDMI port, in addition to the usual DVI and VGA inputs, opens up the possibility of using this monitor as a full-HD companion to a games console or Blu-ray player.

The PLE2407HDS’s colours aren’t the most vibrant – that distinction goes to BenQ’s V2400W – but the picture is crisp and contrast good. Whites were a little on the blue side, although not to the extent of Edge10’s W243h. In our comparative gradient test, the PLE2407HDS showed by far the smoothest transition from white to black.

The menu system is controlled by small buttons on the bottom right of the screen, and a simple but logical navigation system lets you adjust most options. There’s also a set of image quality presets accessible by pressing one of the menu buttons, although these turn off the option of manual control for the brightness, contrast and colour. We found the Movie preset to be the best choice, with deeper colours and better contrast, even in games. In both films and games, motion was incredibly smooth and pleasing to the eye.

The full HD resolution of 1,920×1,080 matches that of Blu-ray movies but provides slightly less desktop space than the other 24in displays here. There’s still plenty of room, but we prefer the higher resolutions offered by the other monitors.

The PLE2407HDS’s speakers and HDMI port make it a solid entertainment choice at a good price, and it has the most accurate colours and the best contrast of the 24in models here. If you’re looking for a monitor that you can also use with a Blu-ray player or games console, the PLE2407HDS is a great choice with stunning image quality. However, if you’re just after a monitor we prefer the Edge10 W243h’s higher resolution, more flexible stand and lower price.
