Best boob tape 2024: Lift and shape without the need for a bra

Lift, shape and secure everything in place with our pick of the best boob tapes to enhance every outfit

Boob tape is a decades-old stylist hack for those occasions where you want to keep a daring outfit from turning into a wardrobe malfunction. Doing exactly what it says on the tin, boob tape is a strong adhesive fabric strip that’s designed to keep low necklines and cut-out garments in the position you need them to sit; it’s ideal when wearing tricky silhouettes such as backless dresses, plunging necklines, and even swimwear.

Boob tape is most often used under clothing where a bra wouldn’t be suitable – with backless and halter-neck looks, and tops with deep-V necks, for example. Boob tape lifts and secure your boobs in place, acting similarly to a bra, but without any straps or outlines being on display. Similar to medical tape, body tape has many functions, and can be used with or without double-sided clothing tape (useful for attaching clothes securely to the body). If you’d like firmer control, adhesive strapless bras provide extra support and lift and are easy to apply.

From inclusive colour options to extra-sturdy tape made with larger cup sizes in mind, read on to discover the highest-rated boob tapes currently available for every occasion and outfit, plus our guide that covers how to choose the best boob tape for you.

How to choose the best boob tape for you

What is boob or body tape?

Boob tape comes in two major variants – a double-sided sticky tape (similar to toupee tape) that’s designed to adhere clothes onto the body to prevent daring necklines from gaping or flapping open; and a single-sided tape that’s similar to medical tape that’s suitable for sticking to the boob area to lift and secure in the position you desire. The tape itself is made using a breathable, second-skin fabric for comfort.

Body tape comes in a roll, allowing you to cut and trim the tape to best fit your boobs and outfit. However, it can be a little tricky to get right the first time, so is probably the best option for seasoned pros, or for those occasions you have enough time before an event to get the tape perfectly in place for your needs.

The option that’s especially suitable for beginners and ladies with larger boobs is a self-adhesive bra. Such bras come already cut into cup shapes, making it easier to determine exactly where to stick everything, plus they deliver the added benefit of extra lift. If a self-adhesive bra is available in various sizes, it’s best to opt for a size up, since you can always trim it down to the size needed.

How do I apply boob tape?

Start with clean, dry skin free that’s free of any oils and creams. Cut a strip of tape long enough to stretch from under the bust to the collarbone or shoulder (depending on the cut of your dress and the amount of support you need). Press the tape on firmly and pull up as you apply, to create a lifting effect on the breast. Allow the tape a few seconds to stick fully before moving.

If you’re laying tape over the nipples, it’s a good idea to use a nipple pasty or similar cover, to prevent the tape adhering strongly to the delicate skin here.

Self-adhesive bras are applied in a similar way; place the bra under the bust and lift as you stick. Double-sided clothing tape is applied along the edges of your neckline, in particular where there are visible gaps or gaping, to prevent clothing flying away from the bust area.

How do I remove boob tape safely?

To remove boob tape, saturate the tape in plenty of body oil. Allow it to soak in for at least 15 minutes, so that the moisture adequately loosens the bond between the tape and skin. A warm bath is an alternative first step to loosen the adhesive. Once the adhesive is loosened, do not remove the tape quickly or at a sharp angle. Instead, pull back the tape gently against itself. Once the tape is removed, use more body oil on a cotton pad to remove any remnants of glue that still remain on the skin.

What is the best boob tape for me?

When choosing a boob tape, it’s important to first map out your cup size and desired outcome. If you have small boobs, we recommend a product such as the Perky Pear Invisible Lift Tape, which offers minimal coverage and maximum oomph. Larger cup sizes should look for a wider tape that will provide more support, such as the cult-favourite Buub Maxi D+ Cupe Adhesive Body Tape.

If you have sensitive skin it’s a good idea to use a hypo-allergenic and latex-free brand of tape, and to perform a patch test before using boob tape for the first time to check for any reactions to the glue. Cut a small piece and place it under the cup at least 24 hours before your event, to ensure no red rash appears.
